Abstract

The development of digital technology has created new opportunities for families to build literate environments while simultaneously posing new challenges for literacy practices. The Family Literacy Movement (GLK) in Lombok Island is not only implemented through printed reading materials but has also begun to utilize digital media such as the Let’s Readapplication, educational YouTube channels, and social media as platforms for children’s literacy activities. This study aims to describe the role of digital literacy in the implementation of the Family Literacy Movement by mothers who are literacy activists, emphasizing both the opportunities it presents and the challenges encountered. The study employed a qualitative approach with a multi-site case study design involving ten families of literacy activist mothers across several districts and cities in Lombok Island. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that digital literacy provides opportunities in the form of more diverse and affordable reading materials, flexible access, and children’s easier adaptation to digital media. However, it also poses challenges, such as limited parental control over screen time, the risk of distraction from non-educational content, and children’s dependency on digital devices. This study highlights that digital literacy within the Family Literacy Movement can serve as a catalyst for strengthening family literacy culture when accompanied by consistent parental guidance strategies and collaboration with literacy communities
