Abstract

Indonesia has a rich and diverse culture, including in the field of martial arts. Mossak is one of the traditional martial arts of the Batak Toba people originating from North Sumatra. The rhythm of movement, floor patterns, as well as the movements of the feet and hands in Mossak are closely related to mathematical concepts. This study aims to explore the mathematical concepts contained in each Mossak movement. The research involved the Mossak community at the Pusuk Buhit Sakti Foundation, consisting of one leader and one member. Various data on Mossak’s movement elements were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the concepts of numbers and sequences, as well as geometry. The results of the study show that the rhythm of movement is related to numerical concepts; the floor patterns are related to geometric shapes; and the movements of the feet and hands are associated with geometry in angles and symmetry, which reflect balance and order in every motion sequence. In addition to cultural preservation, the results of this study are also expected to serve as a reference for mathematics teachers in developing their learning materials
